This is a conversation I had with a student in half English/half Japanese yesterday. I should point out that every Japanese person has a heart attack when they see my Nalgene bottle full of water, as they have no idea why anyone would need that much liquid (let alone much water).
Student: What is in that huge bottle?!
Me: Water.
Student: Why?!
Me: Because I like to drink a lot of water.
Student: Why?!
Me: Because I’m a human being?
Student: That’s so strange!
Me: Why do Japanese people never drink water?
Student: .........
Me: Why do Japanese people only drink tea?
Student: We don’t only drink tea. We also drink coffee!
Me: ........
Student: And Japanese people drink alcohol, too!
Me: .....you’re strange.
