Lately I have had a couple reminders that I truly live in the inaka (middle of nowhere):
-I love me some Coop! It is the teeny store by my apartment that has good stuff and is cheap! However, I never buy beer there. Anyway, the other day I was shopping there and I bought two beers. When the lady at the register scanned the beers, she looked at me and said, “Oooo, this is rare for you!” and gave me a mischievous look to show she was very happy that I was being naughty for once. SAD! I know they know me there, but that is sad that they know what I buy and how often! Hrm.
-I was VERY happy to find a cab waiting at the eki (train station) when I got back from China with my million pounds of luggage (they were on New Year’s holiday when I got back from Thailand last year). I got in the taxi and was giving the driver directions to my house when he interrupted me and told me he remembered from last time. UM, the last time I rode a cab was September at the LATEST! It may have been the spring?! How the hell does he remember where I live?! That is scary! I may have a 70 year-old stalker!!!

maybe a little disturbing, but they are trying to give you good friendly service!
and please, you are probably the only giant gaijin for kilometers around!!
I feel like all of the taxi drivers know me in my "city" too... a little off-putting, but also convenient.
Happy New Year!
